Today, the 63rd Viennale opens with the film MIROIRS NO.3, in the presence of the festival’s new president and the film’s director, Christian Petzold, at the Gartenbaukino.
We would like to take this opportunity, on the eve of the festival, to once again highlight the many outstanding directors, actors, producers, and protagonists who will be joining us as guests of the Viennale to personally present their films.

At today’s press conference at the Volksgarten Pavillon, Viennale Director Eva Sangiorgi – with the support of Jurij Meden (Austrian Film Museum) and Florian Widegger (Metro Kinokulturhaus) – presented an initial preview of the program of the 63rd Viennale and unveiled this year’s festival posters.

On the occasion of the upcoming 63rd Viennale (October 16–28, 2025), we are delighted to invite you to our traditional summer gathering.
VIENNALE 2025 SUMMER PRESS CONFERENCE
Friday, August 22, at 9:30 a.m.
Venue: Volksgarten Pavillon, 1010 Vienna
Viennale Director Eva Sangiorgi will present a first preview of the film program, highlighting this year’s festival themes, and will also unveil the poster motifs for Viennale 2025.
For 36 years, the VOLXkino has been traveling through Vienna, bringing cinema to neighborhoods, parks, and residential areas. This year as well, from June 5 to September 21, the program features an exciting selection of feature films, as well as documentaries, short films, and animated films. With over 40 free open-air film events every summer, VOLXkino is an important part of Vienna’s cultural landscape and a true #cinemaforall!
13 works by the extraordinary Dutch filmmaker featured in the program – including the premiere of her new film HEMELSLEUTEL.
In cooperation with the Dutch distributor Verde Films, the Viennale is already announcing the first part of this year’s festival program. The Viennale is delighted to dedicate a comprehensive retrospective to the work of Dutch director Digna Sinke as part of its 63rd edition (October 16 to 28, 2025). With a cinematic oeuvre marked by quiet observation, poetic depth, and a distinctive sensitivity to change and landscape, Sinke has been one of the most remarkable voices in Dutch cinema since the 1970s.
The Viennale is happy to announce our new president. The German filmmaker Christian Petzold will assume this role, effective immediately, and will thus, after a good four-year vacancy, take over from Eric Pleskow, who was president of the Viennale from 1998 until his death in 2019.
Christian Petzold has been closely connected to the festival for many years as a director and friend. Many of his films have had their Austrian premiere in the Gartenbaukino as part of the Viennale. As president of the Viennale, which is an association, Petzold thus holds the highest position in it.
“The Viennale has had a long-standing relationship with Christian Petzold and his filmmaking, and I personally feel a profound connection to his cinema. For this reason, it’s a great honor that he is taking over the presidency of the festival. Gala Screening of the Film Adaptation of the Play by Peter Weiss – Presented in Collaboration with F & M on the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz
January 27 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where over one million people lost their lives. To mark this occasion, the Viennale, in collaboration with the production company F & M, presents the extraordinary film THE INVESTIGATION, which had its world premiere in early July 2024 at the Munich Film Festival.
